Description

A waterlily dahlia with large, elegant blooms in a clear white shade, touched by a hint of ivory toward the center.

The petals are broad and gently curved, giving the flower a soft, harmonious form reminiscent of a floating waterlily.

The blooms measure about 12 to 15 cm in diameter and are carried on strong stems reaching around 100 cm in height. The variety originates from the renowned Swan Island Dahlias in Oregon, where the cultivation of white dahlias has been refined through generations.

White Swan flowers generously from July until the first frost and has become a cherished variety for its pure color and calm, natural presence.

A variety that has inspired the floral world with its remarkable qualities as a cut flower in bouquets and arrangements.

Care and cultivation advice

There are two ways to go when it comes to growing Dahlia tubers, either you pre-cultivate them or you plant them directly on the site. If you want earlier flowering, we recommend pre-cultivating them sometime around March-April depending on where you live. Start by lightly showering the tuber and then place it in a growing pot with a hole in the bottom. The tuber should be planted about 10 cm below the soil surface in nutrient-rich potting soil and once planted, it will want to be in a bright, cool position. Make sure to water very sparingly at first, until you see green shoots starting to emerge from the soil. Dahlias are planted out after they have hardened off and when the risk of frost is completely over. A little tip is to use a non-woven fabric if there are some chilly nights to be on the safe side.

They can also be planted directly on the site, but it is important to keep an eye out for pests such as slugs, which like to munch on the small plants quickly.

Dahlias thrive best in a sunny position but can also thrive in partial shade. The most important thing is that they have plenty of room for their roots to grow and that the soil is nutritious. If the dahlia is to be planted in a pot, we recommend that it is at least 30 liters and preferably larger than that. Tall-growing varieties need plant support or tying up to prevent the stems from breaking. Dahlias are very thirsty flowers that dry out easily and therefore need abundant but even watering. They also need access to liquid nutrition a few times during the season in order to continue to thrive and flower magnificently until the frost comes. Clear away any overflowering dahlias regularly to promote the growth of new buds. This is also called deadheading and is super important if you want nice plants with lots of flowers.

Reviews

Why we started Florea

Florea grew out of a feeling that something was missing. We couldn’t find anyone online who truly inspired people to grow in a way that felt modern or relevant. It was either very technical or felt a little dated. To us, gardening has always been so much more: something emotional, creative and inspiring.

We wanted to show that gardening is about more than plants. It’s about the feeling of creating something yourself, the calm it brings and the positive effect it has on both body and mind. We felt that side of gardening wasn’t really being given the space it deserved.

What Florea stands for

In a world that keeps moving faster, where more is being automated and AI is always part of the conversation, we feel a strong need to hold on to what makes us human. Growing something yourself is a simple but powerful way to do that.

We often come back to our phrase “Fabrique moi même”, which to us means “created by me”. It captures the heart of what we believe: that the most meaningful things are often the ones you create yourself, even if they’re small or not quite perfect.

A family legacy since 1940

Florea was founded in 2020 by Erik Hoekstra, son of Johannes Hoekstra and grandson of Georg Hoekstra. The company is rooted in a family tradition where gardening and flowers have always been a natural part of life.

It all began with Georg, who grew up among the flower fields of Lisse in the Netherlands. After the Second World War, he began exporting flower bulbs to Scandinavia. Johannes later took over the business, and Erik grew up helping out in the family’s flower fields.

Through Florea, Erik wants to carry on his family’s love of gardening and help more people discover the joy of growing their own flowers, herbs and vegetables.
