Hedges
Hedges have a very long history. They can act as a boundary between different areas of land and protect against the elements. They also provide privacy and can reduce noise from nearby roads. A hedge can increase the value of a property and can be a real eye-catcher, adding character to an environment.
There are many suitable hedge plants
With a wide range of plants suitable for a hedge, it can be difficult to decide which one, or ones, to choose. To some extent, it's a choice about what you think looks good. But there are a few more decisions you need to make.
- Are you willing to spend a lot of time getting the hedge to grow the way you want? Or do you want a hedge that is as easy to maintain as possible?
- How high do you want your hedge to be?
- Based on the characteristics of your soil and your growing zone, which hedge plants will thrive in your area?
- How much are you prepared to pay for a hedge? The price can vary greatly depending on the variety.
Here are some suggestions of hedging plants that are often suitable in Sweden:
- Hornbeam
- chokeberry
- Hedge medlar
- Yew
- Hornbeam
- Boxwood
Hornbeam hedge
A hornbeam hedge is hardy and easy to maintain. It thrives in many different soils and can grow up to 10 meters high. A hornbeam hedge needs to be pruned regularly if you want it to keep its shape.
Chokeberry hedge
A chokeberry hedge withstands wind and cold very well and is medium in height. The chokeberry produces vitamin-rich berries that can be used in the same way as currants.
Hedge medlar
Planting a hedge of medlar gives you a hedge that blooms with white or pink flowers in spring. The hedge is medium in height and requires regular pruning.
Yew hedge
Yew is a classic choice of hedge plant that can grow over 10 meters high and grows densely. Yew contains a substance that can cause irritation if ingested.
Blood beech hedge
Blood beech has red leaves and a blood beech hedge will have a stylish and eye-catching appearance. It is hardy and can grow up to 10 meters high.
Boxwood hedge
Boxwood is a good choice if you want a hedge that is not too tall. A boxwood hedge needs regular pruning.
Year-round privacy with an evergreen hedge
Many of the hedge plants we have listed are evergreen. Ivy, holly and privet are other examples of hedge plants that remain dense and beautiful all year round. With an evergreen hedge, you have privacy and all the other benefits of a hedge, all year round.
Tips for those who want a fast-growing hedge
Planting a hedge and maintaining it until it grows the way you want it can be a project that takes several years. If you don't have the patience, choose a fast-growing hedge. Boxwood, elder and bamboo are examples of fast-growing hedges. You can also buy plants that are a little bigger from the start. Plant in good soil and be sure to water regularly, especially in the first year.
