Growing Your Own Corn from Seed
For many of us, enjoying juicy, freshly boiled corn is a true summer tradition. But imagine having that luxury straight from your own garden. With our corn seeds, you can do exactly that.
Growing your own corn has many benefits. Beyond the superior taste and nutritional value, there is great joy in watching tiny seeds develop into tall corn plants in full growth. Many varieties are also beautiful additions to the garden, with lush foliage and colourful ears.
How to grow corn from seed
Corn is not particularly difficult to grow, but it does require a bit of patience, as it takes time to mature. From sowing to harvest, it typically takes around 3–5 months depending on the variety and growing conditions.
We recommend starting seeds indoors in March–April to give the plants a strong head start before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Sow two to three corn seeds per pot or biodegradable pot, cover with soil, and water lightly.
When the plants are strong enough—usually in late May or early June—it’s time to plant them in their final growing position. Choose a sunny spot in the garden with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil for best results.
Which corn varieties can you grow?
No matter which type you choose, you will notice a significant difference between homegrown and store-bought corn. Homegrown corn has a much richer and sweeter flavour than the corn typically found in shops.
Besides taste, there are other factors to consider when choosing a variety. Do you want an early or late harvest? Do you prefer yellow, white, or perhaps multicoloured ears? We offer a wide selection of corn seeds, ensuring that every grower can find something that suits their preferences and needs.
Why grow your own corn?
Growing your own corn from seed not only gives you freshly harvested ears straight from the garden, but also comes with many additional benefits. It’s a more sustainable choice, as it reduces transportation and food waste, while also supporting biodiversity by providing food for pollinating insects during the flowering period.
It’s also a fun and rewarding activity for both adults and children, offering an opportunity to learn more about nature’s cycles and experience the joy and pride of eating something you’ve grown yourself.
We hope this text has inspired and encouraged you to try growing your own corn from seed. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a complete beginner, there’s nothing quite like harvesting your own vegetables straight from the garden.
