Habanero Red belongs to the group of the hottest chili varieties and reaches up to 350,000 points on the Scoville scale.

The variety is easy to grow and produces green, slightly round fruits that change color to an intense red when they are ready to be harvested.

The plant has a bushy growth habit and has beautiful, decorative, dark green leaves.

The variety is excellent for drying and grinding as a spice for an incredibly hot chili flavor. The strong flavor of the variety makes it perfect for chili stews of all kinds but is also well-known and popular to use in homemade salsa, chili sauce, and ketchup.

A really hot tip from us at Florea is to use this strong chili variety for marinades, and it goes particularly well with meat and chicken.

This variety can also be grown indoors all year round on a sunny windowsill.

Use plant lighting during the darker months of the year to help it thrive and continue to produce lots of red chili fruits that you can pick at any time to use in cooking. So if you're looking for an easy-to-grow chili variety with lots of heat, we HIGHLY recommend Habanero Red!
Care and cultivation advice

Start the seeds indoors from December to March in small pots or containers filled with seed soil. The seeds are phototropic, so moisten the soil, lightly place them on the surface, and press gently. Cover the seeds with transparent covering with air holes for the best germination results, but it is also possible without it. Before germination, the seedlings prefer to be at around 20-25 degrees Celsius, and after germination, slightly cooler but as bright as possible. Since chili plants grow slowly and have a long development period, we recommend using plant lighting. This makes the plants much more lush, thicker, and stronger.

When the roots start to appear on the bottom of the pots, it's time to transplant them to slightly larger pots or planting containers. This time, use planting soil or vegetable soil because the plants need more nutrients than before. For a bushier and more lush appearance, the plant is topped once during pre-cultivation when it reaches about 15-20 cm in height. For best cultivation results, we recommend using weak liquid fertilizer every other week because the plants develop slowly and need a little extra love.

The plants are transplanted after hardening off and when the risk of frost is over. The variety prefers a protected and sunny location, preferably in a greenhouse or on a warm outdoor patio against a wall. Plant them in larger final pots so that they have plenty of space to grow and thrive.

Important to keep in mind: If you sow several different types of chili or pepper, it's important that they are not planted too close together, as they can easily cross-pollinate when they bloom, and the taste may not be the same. This applies both during pre-cultivation and when they are outside too close to each other.

Why we started Florea

Florea grew out of a feeling that something was missing. We couldn’t find anyone online who truly inspired people to grow in a way that felt modern or relevant. It was either very technical or felt a little dated. To us, gardening has always been so much more: something emotional, creative and inspiring.

We wanted to show that gardening is about more than plants. It’s about the feeling of creating something yourself, the calm it brings and the positive effect it has on both body and mind. We felt that side of gardening wasn’t really being given the space it deserved.

What Florea stands for

In a world that keeps moving faster, where more is being automated and AI is always part of the conversation, we feel a strong need to hold on to what makes us human. Growing something yourself is a simple but powerful way to do that.

We often come back to our phrase “Fabrique moi même”, which to us means “created by me”. It captures the heart of what we believe: that the most meaningful things are often the ones you create yourself, even if they’re small or not quite perfect.

A family legacy since 1940

Florea was founded in 2020 by Erik Hoekstra, son of Johannes Hoekstra and grandson of Georg Hoekstra. The company is rooted in a family tradition where gardening and flowers have always been a natural part of life.

It all began with Georg, who grew up among the flower fields of Lisse in the Netherlands. After the Second World War, he began exporting flower bulbs to Scandinavia. Johannes later took over the business, and Erik grew up helping out in the family’s flower fields.

Through Florea, Erik wants to carry on his family’s love of gardening and help more people discover the joy of growing their own flowers, herbs and vegetables.
