Growing Beets
Growing beets with our quality-tested seeds requires neither a lot of time, space nor prior knowledge. Beets are easy to grow and are perfect for beginners. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you succeed:
Step 1: Preparation and planning
-
Choose the right time: Sow beet seeds once the risk of frost has passed and the soil temperature has reached at least 10–15°C.
-
Choose the right location: Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Beets thrive best in bright, sunny conditions.
Step 2: Prepare the soil
-
Loosen the soil: Use a garden fork or spade to loosen the soil to a depth of about 15–20 cm.
-
Add compost: Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility.
Step 3: Sowing the beets
-
Create rows: Make rows with about 30 cm spacing.
-
Sow the seeds: Place the seeds evenly along the rows, about 5 cm apart.
-
Cover with soil: Gently cover the seeds with 1–2 cm of soil.
Step 4: Care and watering
-
Keep the soil moist: Maintain even moisture during germination, using gentle watering to avoid disturbing the seeds.
-
Thin the plants: When seedlings are 5–7 cm tall, thin them to about 10 cm spacing.
Step 5: Harvest
-
Monitor growth: Beets are ready to harvest when they are about 5–7 cm in diameter, usually 6–8 weeks after sowing.
-
Use a spade: Loosen the soil around the beet and lift it carefully.
By following these steps, you’ll enjoy fresh and healthy beets straight from your garden. Try different varieties to discover new flavours and colours.
Are beets healthy?
Yes. Beets are highly nutritious root vegetables rich in antioxidants, especially betalains, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory and cancer-preventive properties. They are also high in dietary fibre, supporting digestion and helping regulate blood sugar levels. Beets contain vitamin C, potassium and manganese, supporting immune health, heart function and healthy blood pressure. Their natural nitrate content has been linked to improved physical performance by increasing oxygen flow to muscles. With low calories and high nutritional value, beets are a versatile and healthy addition to any diet.
