Description
Rilona is a very unique and sought-after amaryllis variety with large apricot-coloured flowers.

The variety has very long stems, which is one of the many reasons why Rilona is such a popular cut flower.

It lasts an unusually long time in a vase and usually blooms a little longer than many other varieties, which we at Florea fell for. This amaryllis variety is Anna Kubel's great favourite and during November-January we see it in various flower arrangements at her home.

Co-planted with other bulbs or in a larger vase.

A fabulous amaryllis that with its apricot-coloured flowers really has that little extra. The bulb flowers after 8-12 weeks.

You can also influence the speed of the bulb's growth by either keeping it in a cool place or with more heat.

The warmer it is, the faster the amaryllis will grow.

Care and cultivation advice

Plant the amaryllis bulb in a pot with good drainage. Leave the width of about two fingers between the edge of the pot and the bulb since amaryllises often grow tall and can become somewhat top-heavy if the pot is too small. Additionally, it's a good idea to use a pot with a saucer because the bulb should not be watered from above.

For best results, consider adding some pieces of leca at the bottom of the pot and then fill it with potting soil. Water the soil thoroughly during planting. Aim for about half of the bulb to stick out of the soil. Then, place the pot with the newly planted bulb in a dark and warm location. When you see the flower stalk emerging, you can start watering, but be conservative with watering throughout to avoid promoting more leaves than flowers. Many amaryllis bulbs can thrive with minimal water. You can also influence the speed of bulb growth by either placing it in a cooler or warmer location. The warmer it is, the faster the amaryllis will grow. The bulb flowers after about 8-12 weeks.

Once an amaryllis has started to bloom, it should be kept slightly cooler than during its growth period for an extended flowering period. When it has finished blooming, you can trim the stem, as there may be more stems developing that could otherwise divert nutrients from the new growth.

Reviews

Why we started Florea

Florea grew out of a feeling that something was missing. We couldn’t find anyone online who truly inspired people to grow in a way that felt modern or relevant. It was either very technical or felt a little dated. To us, gardening has always been so much more: something emotional, creative and inspiring.

We wanted to show that gardening is about more than plants. It’s about the feeling of creating something yourself, the calm it brings and the positive effect it has on both body and mind. We felt that side of gardening wasn’t really being given the space it deserved.

What Florea stands for

In a world that keeps moving faster, where more is being automated and AI is always part of the conversation, we feel a strong need to hold on to what makes us human. Growing something yourself is a simple but powerful way to do that.

We often come back to our phrase “Fabrique moi même”, which to us means “created by me”. It captures the heart of what we believe: that the most meaningful things are often the ones you create yourself, even if they’re small or not quite perfect.

A family legacy since 1940

Florea was founded in 2020 by Erik Hoekstra, son of Johannes Hoekstra and grandson of Georg Hoekstra. The company is rooted in a family tradition where gardening and flowers have always been a natural part of life.

It all began with Georg, who grew up among the flower fields of Lisse in the Netherlands. After the Second World War, he began exporting flower bulbs to Scandinavia. Johannes later took over the business, and Erik grew up helping out in the family’s flower fields.

Through Florea, Erik wants to carry on his family’s love of gardening and help more people discover the joy of growing their own flowers, herbs and vegetables.
