Description

The cucumber Hillwood F1 is a reliable and high-yielding variety, appreciated for its uniform, dark green fruits with a fine flavor and crisp texture.

It has been specially developed for the Nordic climate and produces abundant harvests even during cooler summers.

The fruits grow to about 10–12 centimeters in length, are smooth and free from bitterness, making them perfect for eating fresh as well as for pickling.

Hillwood F1 is a hardy and healthy variety with good resistance to common cucumber diseases, and it thrives equally well in a greenhouse or outdoors in a sheltered spot.Pickling tip for Hillwood:Slice the cucumbers thinly and place them in a bowl with 1 teaspoon of salt.

Let stand for about 30 minutes, then drain off the liquid.

Bring a brine to a boil using 200 milliliters of vinegar (12%), 400 milliliters of sugar, and 600 milliliters of water, along with 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds and a few dill heads.

Let the brine cool slightly and pour it over the cucumbers.

Transfer to clean jars and store in a cool place.

After a couple of days, you’ll have a tangy, fresh, and wonderfully crisp pickle that’s perfect for summer meals.

Care and cultivation advice

Propagate indoors in potting soil or vegetable soil, then make sure to cover with transparent cover provided with air holes or use a mini greenhouse for best results. One seed in each small seed pot is easiest, but it is also possible to sow several seeds in a larger pot and then move them when they have grown up a little to one plant per pot.

Make sure to water the soil properly before planting. Place the seedling at around 25 degrees before germination and around 16-20 degrees after germination. After germination, the plants also want to be as bright as possible, so preferably in a sunny window or under plant lighting.

The plants benefit from being retrained once during indoor cultivation. This means that when the roots emerge from the bottom of the pot, it is time to move it to a slightly larger pot. When the roots then emerge on the underside of the pot again, it is then time to plant it in the final pot. Choose a pot with care that the cucumber plant has good conditions to grow in for best results.

The plants can be planted out after hardening off and when the risk of frost is over and the night temperature is not below +8 degrees. The variety is perfect for growing in a larger pot or in a pallet collar and does not need to be pollinated.
