Description
The Aubergine ‘Pumpkin on a Stick’, also known as the red eggplant, is a fascinating and decorative variety that truly stands out in any assortment.

Originally from Asia, it has long been used both as an ornamental plant and in cooking.

It gets its name from its fruits, which look like tiny pumpkins on sticks, and is used not only in the kitchen but also in floral arrangements and autumn decorations.

The fruits can be harvested green for cooking or left to ripen into their deep orange color for decorative use.

They have a firm texture and a mild, slightly bitter flavor that makes them especially delicious in Asian dishes and stir-fries.Recipe tip for Pumpkin on a Stick: Cut the fruits into pieces and quickly fry them in hot oil together with garlic, ginger, and a little chili.

Add a splash of soy sauce, a teaspoon of honey, and a few drops of sesame oil.

Let it caramelize lightly, then top with fresh coriander or sesame seeds.

Serve with rice or noodles for a colorful and flavorful dish where the eggplant truly shines.

Care and cultivation advice

Propagated indoors in seed soil, one seed per seed pot. Cover the seed with a transparent cover with air holes for best germination results, but it is also possible without. Before germination, the seed should be kept at a temperature of around 22-25°C, and after germination the seed should be kept cool and as bright as possible. Feel free to use plant lighting to get thick and lush seedlings. If the roots start to emerge from the bottom of the seed pot, it's time to transplant them to larger pots, but use potting soil or vegetable soil. For best results, the plants should be topped at 25 cm height, then allow 2-4 side shoots to grow up.

The eggplant plants are planted out when they have hardened off properly and the risk of frost has passed. They do best in a warm, sheltered corner in rich, fertile soil. You can also plant the variety in a pot if you choose a slightly larger model. Make sure to water continuously and to nourish the plants from time to time.

The variety can also be sown directly on the plant site if the soil has reached 15°c, then make sure to cover the sowing with a non-woven fabric at first.
